Due to his powerful and quite exceptional vision, Stancic is considered to be the pioneer of surrealist painting in Croatia. His paintings have a very characteristic dual nature: The paradoxical and the surreal. Emotionally tied to traditional Croatian painting, he created a unique synthesis of the old and the new, the nostalgic and the modern. His interiors, landscapes, and genre-scenes are filled with silence and melancholy. After 1955, he created pieces capturing the poetic spirit of old Varazdin through the contours of local roofs, squares, and streets. |
