Albert Moses (1835-1903) is an extremely significant
portraitist born in Varazdin. He was educated in Vienna, where
he also died. He painted genre scenes, landscapes, religious paintings,
and portraits. He spent most of his life in Vienna, but he was
also coming to Zagreb from time to time, where he portrayed, to
our present knowledge, about twenty outstanding Croatian nobility
and rich bourgeoisie members. Although his works do have some
features of Biedermeier, in his later works, what prevails is
embellishing realism.
The Varazdin Municipal Museum holdings include
three of Moses' paintings.
