Mihael Stroy's portraits from the second half of the 19th c., apart from their artistic value, also have a certain historical value, because they show many outstanding persons of the period. They are very well represented in the collection.
Mihael Stroy (1803-1871) was in his time known as a jet-set portraitist. He was working in Ljubljana and Zagreb, owing to the connections of his relative Stanko Vraz. He came to Zagreb in 1830 as "portraitist and painter of Viennese panoramas". Upon his arrival to Zagreb, the particularities of Viennese Biedermeier painting evolved to Romanticist expression, in keeping with the then National Revival ideas. Many of his works, characterized by his particular elegance and technique consisting of delicate azure paint coats, may today be found in Zagreb, Varazdin, Karlovac, Samobor, Krapina, and Trakoscan. |
