The Historic Department was established in 1991, partially on the basis of the former National Revolution Museum Department (orig. abbrev. MNR). The Department is engaged in researching, collecting, processing, and presenting Museum's holdings associated with the history of the City of Varazdin and the Varazdin County. The future collection on permanent display will include their history from 12th-20th c. In the meantime, thematic exhibitions are organized from the Museum's holdings, thus gradually preparing individual parts of the future permanent collection.
The Historic Department holdings contain over 11,000 items. A number of them come from the former MNR collections.
We should like to mention the following in particular:
- The collection of written and printed materials (around 3,000 documents: Posters, charters, diplomas, brochures, geographic and historic maps, and other printed material),
- numismatic collection (about 5,000 items: Coins, bills, coupons, and securities),
- collection of photographs and negatives (around 2,000 items),
- collection of three-dimensional objects (about 1,000 items: Weapons, military equipment, medals and decorations, ceramics, etc.),
- collection of portraits (mostly oils on canvas, around 40 pieces).
The Historic Department holdings are constantly increasing because materials are being collected on both far and recent past, as well as on contemporary events in the history of Varazdin and the Varazdin County.
