THE SORROWFUL JESUS

| A very valuable piece of religious sculpture by an unknown master. Carved and coloured wood. It was probably a part of an altar. The scene matches the Christ's Suffering motif found in the form of stone sculptures throughout the Varazdin area. The iconographic topic of "Ecce homo" taken over from western Hungary could be found in Varazdin already in the 17th c., only to continue spreading from northwestern Croatia towards Styria.
