The Varazdin Municipal Museum's Etnographic Department was founded in 1933, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Varazdin Museological Society. From its establishment until 1982, when the reconstruction of "Stari grad" (the building hosting the museum) began, the Department's permanent collection was on display at the "Stari grad" fortress.
The Ethnographic Department's holdings represent traditional 19th and 20th c. heritage of the Varazdin area. The total of about 2,400 items has been collected so far.
Since 1989, the Department has had no permanent collection.
