Ernest Kaps was working in Varazdin in the 30's of the 19th c. He was one among the most outstanding Croatian miniaturists of the Biedermeier period. His work is characterized by concise forms, strong lines, and clear colours. His paintings were extremely good and technically elaborate, usually using tempera and water-colour.
