Franjo Nadasdy (1708-1783) was appointed Governor of Croatia and Captain of the Kingdom at Varazdin in 1756. He decided to turn Varazdin into his permanent place of residence, as well as the country's political centre where the Croatian Parliament /Sabor/ would hold its sessions on a permanent basis. Under a Resolution by Queen Maria Theresa from 1767, he was named Chairman of the Croatian Royal Regency Council in Varazdin.
He married Suzana Malatinski, widow of count Kazimir Draskovic. He resided at the Draskovic family palace on Varazdin's main square. He stayed in Varazdin until the terrible fire that hit the city. Painter Antun Deuetscher, originally from Slovenia, painted the choir at St. Mary Magdalene's church in Ivanec near Varazdin. |
