Established 1925. The permanent exhibition is located at "Stari grad", a Gothic/Renaissance fortification. It includes a number of both local and foreign items (about 30,000). The holdings have been classified into the following collections: Insignia; Guild Items; Paintings; Sculptures; Furniture; Ceramics; Glass; Costumes & Accessories; Photographs; Metals; Weapons; Cannons; Clocks & Watches; Historic Documents; Books, and memorial collections of Varazdin's outstanding citizens Ivan Kukuljevic Sakcinski and Vatroslav Jagic.
Utility and art objects illustrate Croatia's artistic production and material culture from the 14th to the 20th c.
The collections bring testimony of cultural, economic, and political life in Varazdin and its surroundings.
Most of the Museum's books pertain to the Cultural & Historic Department. It includes the holdings of the former Paulist library in Lepoglava; the Varazdin high-school library; the counts of Bombelles' library from Opeka; and the local Leitner family library. The books, which have not been inventoried yet, are kept in several of the Museum's buildings. Among them are extremely valuable national heritage specimens (Kajkaviana), as well as 16th - 20th c. European literature pieces.
