The Dignitaries' Lane

Over the history, a number of scientists and technicians were living and working in Croatia, whose achievements include them among the great names of scientific and technical development in global terms.

Let us here mention only some of them: Marko Antun de Dominis, Marin Getaldic, Faust Vrancic, Rudjer Boskovic, Nikola Tesla, Franjo Hannaman, Andrija Mohorovicic, and Nobel-Prize winners Lavoslav Ruzicka and Vladimir Prelog.

Croatia was also the home of Ivan Blaz Lupis Vukic, the first torpedo designer; David Schwarz, who patented the first aircraft (a baloon, in fact) made of aluminum (his patents were later bought by Count Zeppelin); Slavoljub Penkala, inventor of the pen, still bearing his name all around the world; Antun Lucic-Lucas, a pioneer of oil mining (included among 200 most deserving Americans in the entire history), and Josip Ressel, designer of the first steamer screw, replacing the former disproportional side wheels.

In its efforts to introduce as many people as possible to their achievements, the Technical Museum has begun to erect a sculpture lane in the park surrounding it. Monuments to Ivan Krstitelj Rabljanin, Faust Vrancic, and Rugjer Boskovic are already in position, soon to be joined by other monuments which will remind the visitors of Croatia's renowned scientists and inventors.
