The Kernereuter Steam Fire-Hose

  • Dimensions: 350 x 180 x 160 cm
  • TMZ, inv. n° 491

Transportable steam fire-hose placed on a drawn waggon, manufactured in 1889 in Vienna. Two-cylinder piston steam engine with a recognizably high funnel drives the piston fire-hose with a pressure radiator.

The fire-hose has had a very interesting history. Julio Zigeunner, a waiter from Zagreb, having won the highest lottery prize, donated 2,900 florins to the Zagreb Voluntary Fire-Brigade. The money was used for the purchase of one among the latest fire-hose models of the period. The fire-hose, called Julio's Steamer, was first used by the Zagreb firemen on 2 March, 1890. It was a huge technical advancement at the time, since strictly manual fire-hoses were used before that.

The fire-hose was later used by the Zagreb Fire-Brigade. In 1970, it was donated to the Museum.

It was thoroughly reconstructed in 1992, courtesy of Autokaroserija Oresic from Zagreb.
