A model of the first American satellite, exhibited at the Museum in its actual size, made by the Belgrade Centre for Flying-Model Construction in 1970. Launched on 31 January, 1958, the satellite was equipped with measuring instruments, the most important among them being the Geiger counter. The analysis of recorded data made it possible for the American scientist Van Allen to discover radiation belts around our planet that were named after him. The satellite was circling around the Earth for more than twelve years, having gone around it for over 58,000 times. |
