Man has been dreaming of flying probably since the very beginning of times. Man's desire to fly like a bird is best illustrated by the famous Greek legend on the engineer Daedalus and his son Icarus who managed to fly using wings made of bird feathers. Still, the issue of flying had to be approached scientifically, which was first done by Leonardo da Vinci. Man's first successful flights were achieved with crafts lighter than air - baloons. However, it was only the internal combustion engine that made it possible for man to design crafts which are able to take off, move in desired directions, and land safely using their own power. Through the aircrafts' further development, piston engines were replaced by jet, and finally rocket engines, making possible even flights to space. |
