The Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden

  • oil on wood

  • inv. nr SG-95

Donated by Josip Juraj Strossmayer in 1885.

Although purchased as Albertinelli's work, the 1895, 191? and 1917 catalogues suggest Father Bartolomeo as the author of the painting. European experts A. Venturi (1925) and B. Berenson (1932, 1936, and 1963) return to Albertinelli as the author, considering "The Expulsion" to be one among his early works. On this painting, the Florentine painter from the turn of the century, when his native town was the centre of the greatest artists, shows us the very beginning of human trouble - the punishment for the original sin, the expulsion from heaven. In the idealistically painted landscape, human figures in close-up follow the direction shown by God's relentless right hand index.
