Tusculum - the regional building of the Split Archaeological Museum was built in 1898 in Solin next to the ruins of an early Christian basilica at Manastirine. It was commissioned by Father Frane Bulic and was intended to be used by archaeologists for the purpose of archaeological work. The facade of Tusculum is decorated with different archaeological finds: capitals, inscriptions, and statues the greatest number of which originate from the old belfry of the Split cathedral, and some from Solana. Set up in 1984 on the ground floor of the building was the memorial room of Father Frane Bulic, the greatest Croatian archaeologist and researcher of Salona. The room is furnished with original furniture from Bulic's time, with his personal belongings displayed in show-cases and numerous photographs on the walls documenting his work. At the southern side of the building there is a garden with a charming walk flanked by columns decorated with capitals of various styles and originating from Salona. Today, this building houses the curatorial rooms, a reference library, a workshop of the architectural department, and a depository |
