Matija Petar Katancic
(Valpovo, 1750 - Budim 1825)
One among the most learned men of the turn of the 19th c.: writer, university professor of archeology & numismatics, library curator, the fist translator of the Holy Scriptures into Croatian.
Katancic is also the author of the first Croatian archeological tractate, "Dissertatio de columna millaria = Tractate on the Roman Milestone Discovered near Osijek", a significant expert piece elaborated during his stay at Osijek's Franciscan friary. It was printed at the famous Divald's printing-office (three generations of master-printers, 1775-1857). Along with an exhausting tractate, it also contains a drawing of this lost milestone, as well as a ground-plan of Roman Mursa. |
