HANS VON JUDENBURG: THE MEETING OF JOACHIM AND ANA AT THE GOLD GATE
- wood with traces of polychromy and gilding
- Bolzano 1422/23
- Purchased in 1884 from the Vrbovec parochial church
- size: 88 x 70 cm
- The relief showing Joachim and Ana is in fact a part of the former flank-altar of the Bolzano parochial church. In terms of style and type, it pertains to a workshop at the German/Styrian town of Judenburg managed in the second decade of the 15th c. by master Hans of Judenburg. By its wooden altars and sculptures, the workshop influenced a wider eastern alpine area at the time. Its most significant monument was the flank-altar at the south Tyrol town of Bolzano's parochial church. The relief comes from that same altar. Morphologically speaking, the relief pertains to the so called soft style, which appeared around 1400.
