A TAPESTRY: "Laureolla Meets Her Mother"

  • Tournai, France, around 1500
  • basically wool; weft: Wool and some silk
  • 274 x 364 cm

A very popular medieval romance novel from the end of the 15th c. entitled "Carcel de amor" by Spanish writer Diego de San Pedro provided the tapestry motif. The plot concerns hopeless love of the hero Lerian for Laureolla, the King's daughter. Its title results from the unanswered love of the hero Lerian who becomes a prisoner in his own "Prison of Love".

The tapestry is incomplete, showing only parts of the easel on both sides. The surface is filled with a composition of twelve characters in three levels. The main characters in the centre are the Queen Mother and her daughter Laureolla, whose name may be read on the girl's skirt. To the left of Laureolla are two ladies-in-waiting. The King stands to the right of the Queen, slightly behind her, accompanied by a messenger and a group of courtiers.

A nearly identical tapestry, only complete, may be found at le Musée de Cluny. A banderole along the upper edge holds the text from the novel explaining the scene. Both tapestries were made after the same model, with only slight variations in garment details.

The tapestry was once owned by the Croatian counts of Zrinski. It came to the Museum in 1918 from the Festetic family manor-house.
