MUO's Paintings & Graphics Collection includes over 4,000 works of art: Paintings, graphics, sketches, and miniatures representing nearly all European painting schools and styles from the Gothic period until the present day. The collection was created mostly from private donations which were offered quite frequently by both nobility and other citizens.

The Gothic and Renaissance periods are represented by the works of several Italian masters, among which we should like to single out Vittore Carpaccio and Bartolomeo Vivarini.

In the Baroque period, we should like to single out a group of paintings by Dutch masters (Jan Victors, Jan Lievens, C. D. van der Heck, E. van de Velde, etc.), and particularly several works by Rembrant's disciples. The collection also includes renowned works by French (Charles Lebrun), Italian (Guido Reni, Il Guercino, Jacopo Bassano, Canaletto, etc.), Spanish (Velasquez' school) and Flemish masters (Balthasar Van den Bosche).

Another important segment of the collection are the 19th c. paintings including not only the works by nearly all artists who were active on Croatian territory: M. Stroy, I. Zasche, Lj. Cetinovic, I. Ziegler, V. Porketh, or by Zagreb's miniaturists: J. Stager, D. Stark and others, but also those by famous world masters such as G. F. Waldmüller, F. Amerling, Theodor Peter, J. Kriehuber, M. Daffinger.

The segment referring to the 20th c. is none the less important, including several hundred paintings by nearly all major local artists of the period: Racic, Kraljevic, Trepse, Gecan, Murtic, Sebalj, Nives Kavuric-Kurtovic, Vrkljan, Kipke, Roncevic, etc.

The permanent exhibition includes 150 paintings, among which some by the above mentioned artists. However, the largest part of the collection is still accessible to the public only through occasional exhibitions.
