THE FOUR EVANGELISTS

  • stained wood
  • northern Croatia, first quarter of the 18th c.
  • from Samobor (?)
  • height: 74 cm
  • The four evangelists' sculptures most probably pertained to a pulpit, where they usually appeared during mannerism and Baroque. The evangelists are particularly appealing owing to their striking heads of an unusual type with quite specific hair presentation. Unfortunately, the original polychromy and gilding have been completely removed, while the wood has been polished using brown colour, which made all their features melt into a single rather drab shade. In terms of style and typology, the evangelists belong to the first decades of the 18th c.. They were made by an anonimous sculptor from the area of Samobor.
