CHRIST THE KING
- polychrome, gilt wood
- initial origin unknown
- around 1630
- from the Vrbovec parochial church
- height: 128 cm
- Christ is, as an earthly king, usually shown with a mantle, a sceptre, a crown, and a sphere. This particular sculpture, where some of the attributes are missing, could, in terms of style, pertain to the circle of mannerist sculptors from the so called Weilheim school in the Bavarian city of Weilhelm. Typologically speaking, it is directly associated with the work of Hans Spindler (around 1595 - around 1647), who worked in Upper Austria. By its closed and concentrated form, the statue represents a synthesis of Munich's sophisticated late imperial mannerism and carving trade coming from popular tradition.
