Sphagnum

sp. – peat-bog communities in Kordun

The peat-bog vegetation in the region of Karlovac, parts of Kupa basin and Kordun belong to the Horvat Central European transitional peat-bog community (Rhynchsporetum albae croaticum). Along types of peat moss (Sphagnum) there are other interesting types of vegetation linked with the peat-bog community:

  • brown birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh);
  • buck grass (Lycopdium clavatum L.);
  • common club moss (Lycopdium inundatum L.);
  • bean trefoil (Menyanthes trifolata L.);
  • small bladderwort (Utricularia minor L.);
  • buckhorn fern (Osmunda regalis L.);
  • sundew (Drosera rutundifolia L.) and others

The best know sited of peat-bog communities are: Borlin, Knez Gorica, Vukmanic, and the peat-bogs along the stream Trebinja and Gradnica, Banski Moravci, Skakavac, Utinja, Vrginmost (Gvozd) and Blatusa.

Peat-bogs as communities are disappearing in the following regions: Bolin, Jelsa, Ilovac, Zadobarje, Luscic, Kozjaca, Jamadol, Orlovac, Skupica and the slopes of Petrova Gora along the river Radonja.
