THE COLLECTION OF THE PANNONIAN AREA FOLK COSTUMES

The Pannonian ethnographic zone encompasses northern, lowland parts of Croatia, spreading from Medjimurje in the northwest to Baranya in the east. Many items pertaining to the Pannonian zone came to the Museum from smaller museums and private collections back in 1919, the year of its establishment. Most of these items originate from the second half of the 19th c. or from the first decades of the 20th c., while the oldest exhibits date back to the 18th c.

Individual areas have been systematically processed, so that the Museum today has at its disposal extremely valuable textile items from the area of Sava Valley, Kupa Valley, Slavonia, and Baranya. We may even note several phases in clothing or even fashion styles.

Within the Pannonian zone itself, we may observe many differences. However, certain constant features are still there. White home-made linen is of vegetable origin - flax, hemp, or cotton. The basic woman's wardrobe parts follow the tripartite pattern: Shirt, skirt (sewn together or as two-piece), and apron. Man's wardrobe in turn consists of shirt and trousers. The wardrobe is uncut, since individual parts were made by putting together the edges of straight cloth pieces, with more or less folds. The basic wardrobe was in wintertime added upper clothing made of fur or broadcloth.

The variety and mutual difference of folk costumes is primarily observed in techniques, materials, as well as ornaments' location and volume. Particularly interesting are the clothing variations for certain ocassions: Weddings, funerals, christenings, or different church holidays. Each variant also includes sub-variants for individual age groups.
