The piano has a simple design with inverted key colours (like harpsichord): black for full tones and white for semitones. The sound, as thin as that produced by a spinet, is generated by plectra which pluck the strings connected in sets of three. It features 5 octaves beginning with A and ending with G. The piano has no pedal. Under the lid hinge there is a wooden music rest and on the sides two candle rackets. A simply inlaid panel next to the keyboard contains an enamelled shield with the inscription: Anton Walter in Wien. Walter was a well-known piano-maker among whose customers was also W.A. Mozart.
