Marin Getaldic was a distinguished mathematician and physicist and an outstanding explorer. He was born in Dubrovnik in 1568 and died in 1626. He was renowned for the application of algebra in geometry and his research in the field of geometrical optics on which he wrote 7 works. He also conducted physical and astronomical experiments and measurements. He was said to have made an telescope. In addition to this, Getaldic was also engaged in politics and was the envoy of the Republic in Constantinople in 1606 as well as the member of the Great and Small Council. He travelled throughout Europe for six years conducting tireless research work including numerous experiments. Returning to his native town he continued his work which resulted in a great number of scientific publications. Towards the end of his life he became the senator of the Dubrovnik Republic. Here he is portrayed in his study in middle age. In his hand he is holding a paper with an angle trisection. Displayed in his study are his works as well as globe and a planetarium.
