Carlo Francesco Nuvoloni (Cremona, 1608 - Milan, 1661), a representative of the Milan baroque school, he was taught by his father and worked under the influence of Guido Reni. He created emotive compositions with attractive colouring. The painting was once housed in the Dubrovnik Scheherezade, a mansion with a blue dome built in the Moorish style in the early 20th century and was owned by Zindim Viliam. In 1979, it was moved from the Art Gallery (where it was stored in the depository) to the Rector's Palace where it has been displayed. This historical theme represents the dying Lucretia, the wife of Tranquin Colantin, who wounded herself fatally after being raped by Sextus Tranquin, a member of the royal family. This event was said to have brought about the fall of the Roman kingdom around 510 B.C. Lucretia's name thus came to symbolise female chastity.
